The Federal Communications Commission announced a first-of-its-kind spectrum opportunity enabling Tribal Organizations to access and acquire rights to dedicated spectrum – the 2.5GHz Rural Tribal Window. This window is a unique opportunity for Tribes in rural areas to directly access unassigned spectrum over their Tribal lands, subject to buildout requirements. The 2.5 GHz band is suitable for both mobile coverage and fixed point-to-point uses and is currently used to provide broadband service by legacy educational licensees and commercial providers that lease the spectrum. Depending on each Tribal Organization’s needs, it can play an important role in the deployment of broadband and other advanced communications services on Tribal lands.

Microcom is helping Tribal Organizations utilize their newly acquired 2.5GHz spectrum from the FCC. Microcom is a local Alaskan full-service telecommunications company with the capabilities to provide feasibility studies, engineering, equipment, installation, billing, and support for a variety of 2.5 GHz wireless system deployments in villages across Alaska. Working with Pacific Dataport Inc, Microcom can also assist communities in securing needed backhaul capacity to connect 2.5GHz wireless systems to the Internet with new broadband satellite services coming to Alaska in 2021.
